womens newsletter december 08

WOMEN'S NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2008

As the first half of the season has concluded it is timely to reflect on where we are, where we are heading and keep you up to date on things going on at the club.

We are delighted with the healthy increase of numbers this year. 10 players have made their senior debuts this year – the latest being Cara Allen who made 4no against Port in the Bs last Saturday. We have also had 9 new players at Under 13 level.

We had 10 players playing in our first home game for the Under 13s. (eight required)

The result of this has meant the C grade have fielded full teams of 9 each game and the B grade have been short twice.

In recent weeks we have welcomed back Amy White after exam commitments.

We have received a clearance from West Torrens for former state squad member Karin Prince and Jess Vincent (at last) is keen to play in the new year.  Jess has moved to Adelaide after living in the Riverland for three years.

We also welcome Brendan Murphy (Murf) our new SACA cricket officer who has assisted us on Fridays and will be an outstanding resource.

State news:

Tahlia McGrath and Kylie Rattray were selected in the state Under 15 team which played in Brisbane in December.  Tahlia was top score in the first game against Queensland.

Jess O'Reilly and Dayna Cox won positions in the Under 17 team to play in Canberra in mid January.

Grant news

We have won a grant from the Department of Recreation and Sport for Primary School aged girls.  This money will assist us with publicity, gear and setting up games over the next two years.

Achievements

The Cs had a struck a rich vein of form in the middle of the season.  After our first win against Sturt we followed up with a convincing win over Tea Tree Gully.  We were well set against Port good being 2/66 after seven overs chasing 120!  (Oh for a scoreboard!)

Our 92 run opening stand over Prospect and the subsequent tie was a highlight. (RACHAEL GREENSHIELDS AND TAHLIA MCGRATH)  Tahlia McGrath making the first 50 in C grade in two seasons.

B grade

The B grade have had good wins over East Torrens and Kensington OUTRIGHT (only club in B grade to win outright this season.)  Our umpires were really impressed with the sporting nature of the declaration.  (2/76 in reply to 42 – Kensington made 11 in reply.)

Tahlia McGrath won the ULTRA CAR PLAYER OF THE MONTH with good runs in November and 5/2 in the outright over Kensington.

Under 16

Lauren Goldsmith won the Powerade Cricketer of the Week (SACA award) for her three wickets in four balls in her first game for us.

Overseas:

Nikki Koritsa is spending Christmas in Germany

Jess O'Reilly spent a fortnight in China as part of the Brighton High orchestra.

Coaching news:

Thanks to Shari Bray who has agreed to take on the Under 13 team.

There are opportunities to coach at Primary Schools after school as part of the Active After Schools Program.  Rachael Greenshields and Dayna Cox assisted last year.  We are able to pay you for your work!!!!  Contact Kempey

c grade girls breakthrough for first win

C GRADE GIRLS BREAKTHROUGH FOR FIRST WIN

The C grade team has broken their duck!

After 20 games last season and two this season the Cs have had a win.

Sturt batted first after winning the toss.  We held them to 18 off the first five overs, 36 off 10 to keep the game within reach.  We dismissed the Blues seven balls inside the required 20.  Hannah Clarke took the figures with 2/10, but it was Nic Adams two wickets in the 12th over which restricted Sturt to 80.  Our ground fielding was very good with many singles cut off and we conceded only  three 4s (after 11 in round one.)  Nikki's run out was well done and Rachael Greenshields with her first effort as a keeper was very solid.

Our reply was set up with a solid 34 run stand between Rachael Greenshields 10 (29) and Tahlia McGrath.  Tahlia had a 16 runs stand with Kylie (2), but  the match winning partnership of 35 (32 balls) saw us pass the set score with 21 balls to spare.

Tahlia continued her rich vein of form (11 last week) with 35 off 44 balls.  Her driving off the back foot and judgement of a single were a highlight.

Win on June 17 and SAPSASA news

A team of “fill ins” gave Southern a big win on June. With five regular players unavailable due to exams, early commitments and state duties our “fill in” side had a big win.
We batted first making 163. Southern Under 14 player Nathan Ralph and April Diener making 54, regulars Donna Clark and Emma Genockey 23, Jamie Diener (brother of April) and Kylie Rattray 52 and Tayla Ferguson and Michael Genockey (brother of Emma) 34.
Our opponents made 31, 4, 12 and 31. Our fielding was very good with Jamie Diener getting three run outs, Nathan Ralph three catches, Emma a run out, Kylie a stumping and Donna bowled very economically.
A highlight of our fielding was the quick thinking evasive skills of Tayla Ferguson who avoided a flying bat from a mis-hit shot.
News from Darwin is that Rachael Greenshields took the first wicket to fall to a South Australian for the tournament in the SAPSASA girls game against Victoria. She also achieved her PB of 8 (40 minutes batting) against NSW on Tuesday.
Courtney Brideson made her PB of 9 (12 balls) in the Invitation side's win over the ACT on Tuesday.

indoor cricket news june 2

We batted first making 40. Our first two pairs Kylie R and Courtney (21) and Donna and Rachael (25) batted very intelligently to have us at 44 mid innings. But our third and fourth pairs April and Nikki (-1) and the O'Reillys (-5) meant we had 40 to defend. Our opponents made 107, with partnerships of 37, 3, 48 and 19. Courtney backed up her good batting with two wickets and a run out; April took three wickets (two bowled), Rachael a left handed run out and a catch, Nikki took a wicket and Kylie R a catch as keeper.
There is no game next week due to the holiday Monday.
Our next game is June 16 at the early time of 4.30.
We wish Rachael and Courtney well as they venture to Darwin for the Australian Primary Schools Championships in Darwin starting on June 15.

Stingers girls breakthrough for first win

The Stingrays girls won their first game for the season with a very convincing 119 run win. Donna and Rachael gave us a great start with 50 (second for the season), Courtney and Emma made 7, newcomers Hamish Ferguson (Tayla's brother filling in for injured sister) and April Deiner made 84 (best partnership for any wicket for the season) and Jess and Kylie R made 49. (*** Kylie R hit her first "7" for the season. )This gave us a season high of 190. Our opponents made 21, 6, 16 and 28 to finish with 71.
Highlights of our bowling and fielding included 2 run outs to Hamish and Kylie, a run out to Jess and a catch and wicket to Donna and Emma. Well done team. Next game 5.30 June 2.

Indoor Cricket news game two May 19

After winning the toss we made 82. (About 40 runs short of what we were after.)
Tayla Ferguson (playing her first game in Stingers indoor colours) and Donna Clark gave us a solid start with 21. Emma and Rachael made 1. Kylie R and Courtney put on the best partnership for the season with 50 (including Courtney hitting the first '7'.) Jess and Alex scampered well for 10 (which could have been alot more - losing three wickets in four balls did not help!)
Our opponents scored 42, 62, 32 and 1. Kylie R got three run outs, a stumping and a catch, Rachael two run outs and Jess a run out and a caught and bowled.
Next game 5.30 may 26.
