C’s open with a win – As and Bs not so good

The C grade opened their season with a one wicket win over Kensington. Hannah Armstrong (after games in the Bs) opened with a dominant 33 not out.

We bowled first dismissing Kensington off the last ball of the 20th over. Hannah Baker took the figures with 2/22 (including 2009/10 Dittmar medalist Alice Johnswood.) Hannah Armstrong took 1/16, sister Kelly 0/12 off four, Captain Emily 1/6, Georgia Tilbrook 1/6 and debutant Zoe Faulkner 1/4.  Marg Jude was in great form behind the stumps with a catch, stumping and two run outs.  A big thank you to Marg Hay who assisted with sub fielding duties.

Our two Hannah’s (Armstrong and Baker) put on 31 for the first wicket (six overs) to give us a good foundation. We lost 4/16 to be 5/57 in the 12th (with Hannah retired) – but a sixth wicket stand between Marg Jude and Serena Ongley took the score to 80 with five overs remaining. After Serena’s dismissal Marg and the returning Hannah Armstrong took the score passed the 84 needed for the win.

The As played Kensis for the second game in a row (50 overs last game) and had them in early trouble with 2/26 in the fourth over. They recovered with a 50 run fifth wicket stand in the last eight overs to finish with 112. Donna Clark had the figures with 2/12.

We lost early wickets (including three in seven balls from State rep Sarah Jameson) to be 4/12 in the 5th over. Kylie (18 off 19) and Dayna (17 off 24) took the score to 42 to have the best partnership for the innings.

The Bs bowled and fielded well to keep Torrens to 68 off 20 overs. Kayla Stazuk bowled 4 overs for 8 and Brandi 4 overs 1/6 to keep a tight rein on their opening bats. Debutant Talia Barrett with six runs of her three overs also bowled well.

We lost wickets at regular intervals and did not establish the partnerships needed for the run chase.

Congratulations to Cara who did a very good job Captaining the Bs for the first time.  She had good fielding placings and rotated her bowling well.

This week the As welcome Victorian Captain Emma Inglis for a game on Saturday at Gordon Brown and the Bs (Col Waite at the moment) and Cs at Gordon Brown on Sunday.

Welcome and welcome back

We welcome back Steph Barrett who played for us two seasons ago.

We welcome Talia Barrett (no relation) who comes to us via Marg Hay’s contacts in Women’s Footy. Talia played for Flinders (when Kempey was there) and is a medium pace bowler and top order batter.

Zoe Faulkner had her first C grade game for Southern – having played in the Primary School Boys team at Mt Compass.

BIRTHDAYS

Early November sees an avalanche of Stingray birthdays – Donna, Kate Weger, Shari, Kempey, the Armstrong twins  and Tahlia McGrath (!) to name just seven! Best wishes.

Bs give top team a run for their money

The Bs lost to top team Adelaide Uni by 15 runs.

We put them in and had them 5/46 in the 12th over. The wickets were shared with Cara 1/8, Chloe 1/8 (off three), Kayla 1/14 and Hannah Armstrong 1/14 taking the four wickets to fall to bowlers. The highlight of the fielding was Hannah took a great falling catch at square leg off Chloe and a throw from side on by Brandi to get a run out. The Uni side batted Captain Kylie Tulloch at six and a 53 run sixth wicket stand took them to 109. Jess and Courtney held them to six off the last two overs.

Jess and Courtney gave us a sniff with their batting – Jess 56 off 58 balls with five fours and a six batted herself back in to form and Courtney 10 no – put on 51 (unbroken) to get us within touch.

This week all THREE teams take the field – with the Cs and As at Col Waite (Kensington – in the Parkinson Oval complex) and the Bs at Henley High.

ROUND TWO A GRADE ROUND ONE T20 B GRADE

There were some very encouraging individual performances in the second weekend of Women’s Cricket.

Two players achieved significant PBs and our English debutant took four wickets.

The As put Kensington in and chased leather for 50 overs. We dismissed current New Zealand player Lisa Doolan early to have the Browns 1/20 in the sixth over – but a 116 run second wicket stand between Sheridan and Patterson set up the Kensington innings. They finished with 252. Courtney had the figures with 3/40 off eight and Talia bowled well to end up with 1/49.

We lost wickets early to be 4/1 off six overs. Jess (4) and Kylie (11 off 28 balls) took us to 73 and out of the “danger zone” (after 5pm).

The innings belonged to Tahlia McGrath who followed up her 49 last week with a PB of 60. She batted with good defence in the early part of the innings, drove well “in the V” and cut and pulled well. She received well deserved praise from the opposition coach and Umpires.

We batted to just after 6pm and into the 44th over finishing with 132.

The Bs T20 saw a similar result. The Northern / TTG openers made 48 off the first seven setting a platform for 6/131. Debutant Chloe Lyons took 4/18 (including a wicket with her second ball) bowling with the strong breeze. She bowled accurately and was well supported by the Umpire (two lbws) and fellow debutant Erin Bogan took a catch.

Our batting was highlighted with a PB from Captain Brandi Ongley (24) who held the innings together. The best partnership was 23 with Chloe Lyons and 14 with Emily Armstrong who finished with 3no (PB).

CONGRATULATIONS:

We wish to congratulate Josh Golding for his efforts over the last two weekends. Josh made his senior debut last week taking five wickets over two innings and setting up the Ds for an outright win. This week he took a PB of 7/12 playing for the Under 16 Reds at Bice Oval.

Josh has been a “net” bowler for us over the last two seasons and has been a great supporter of Women’s Cricket at Southern.

Well done Josh.

ROUND ONE - A grade DEBUTANTS START WELL

The As went down but our two debutants (Kelly and Brittney) had good games in the first round of Women’s Cricket. Both players were presented with their “baggy reds” before the game and became players 25 and 26 to wear the “Baggy Red.”

We had two debut players in the stand-alone A grade round this weekend. C grader Kelly Armstrong (12) and Brittney Miller (14) played against West Torrens.

Kelly was first in the game, bowling first change into the breeze. She took her first A grade wicket in her third over having West Torrens Number 4 caught by Donna Clark at mid on. Her final figures were 1/21 off four overs. Kelly took a catch at square leg off Courtney in the 33rd over.

Brittney bowled later in the innings – after 10 runs off her first over she finished with 2/18 (both bowled) off four overs. She also took a catch.

West Torrens made 228 (all out) with Dayna took two early wickets (State player Angela Moritz for 39 and Australian player Lauren Ebsary for three), Jess took 3/28 off 9 and Brittney two.

We lost early wickets to be 4/30 – but a 32 run stand between Tahlia McGrath (49) and Cara Allen (3) took us out of the "danger zone" of outright defeat. Tahlia made 49 out of 81 when her wicket fell. (There were 63 runs off the bat at that stage!!!) 70+% of the runs!

This week both games are up in Adelaide at Park 25 on Sunday with the As on Number one against Kensington (50 over) at 11.50 and the Bs at Number 3 at 12 noon (T20).

Welcomes:

We welcome Chloe Lyons to Southern. Chloe is a right hand bat, medium pacer and wicket keeper from Somerset in England.

Welcome also to Zoe Faulkner who comes to us from Mt Compass (where captain Jess O’Reilly started her cricket!!!!) and is a right hand bat, right arm medium pacer.

SCORERS WORKSHOP

There is a scorer’s workshop at the Club Monday evening – all welcome.

Kelly and Captain Jess discuss field placements.

Both teams end the season with a loss

Both teams lost their final games for the Indoor season.

The Seniors lost the Grand Final to Sharks (who only lost one game for the season) by 25 runs.

They batted first and were held to 96. Their first pair made 45, second 8 (great bowling from Johnny and Rachael taking five wickets between them), third 21 and fourth 22.

Our first two pairs (Brandi and James and Donna and Rachael) had us at 53 - the same as our opponents at the same time. But our last two pairs made 2 and 16.

The Under 12s had a similar game. Our opponents Lil Rippers made 95. They had partnerships of 31, 26, 25 and 13. (Kelly took three wickets)

Our first pair of Jessie and Emily made 31 but our next three pairs could not keep up the momentum with Eben and Ethan making 4, Liam and Nikki 18 and Kelly and Hannah 35. We finished with 88.

Thanks to all the parents and supported who came to games during the season.

Outdoor cricket kicks off this weekend (Oct 7) with an A grade game. B grade have two games 16 October and 23 October before the Cs start on 30th October.

A warm welcome to our new players this year - Chloe Lyons (ex UK) and Zoe Faulkner (Mt Compass) and a welcome back to Brittney Miller (after a years absence.)
