DONNA ON TOP OF A GRADE BOWLING

Going into the last game Donna and Neesha Iles (TTG/N) were equal on 17 wickets apiece.

It was always going to a close run thing.

Our batters had an alteria motive when batting – don’t get out to Neesh!  Rachael (in her first spell) and Kylie (in her second) fell victim to the wily medium pacer.

As the TTG N innings started Donna needed two wickets to tie and three to win the trophy.  After her first spell of five overs she had 0/17.  She took the wicket of Kate Murphy in her second spell to have them 6/69.  The Ainslee Knight / Chloe  Scheer partnership of 50 saw Donna re-introduced taking the wickets of tailenders Kruse and Blackwell in three balls to have them 9/120.

Donna has bowled consistently all season with a big workload of  96  overs for the season.  She has constantly given us early wickets (with 14 of her 20 being top order players.)

Donna also earned selection in the Australian Under 16 Indoor side which played (and won) the International Indoor titles in South Africa in September.

losses in the last round

The season finished with losses to both teams.

However there was some good news, Kate finished with her third score of over 40 as the Bs just failed to chase down East Torrens.

The As loss was highlighted by Donna’s three wickets which unofficially gives her the SACA bowling trophy for A grade.

The Bs received a bonus with the late call up of Brandi Ongley who gave us a great start with 18 runs of the first over. She and Nuggett put on 54 in eight overs in quest of 181.

Kate Weger continued her good form with 40 no.  Bakes (30) and Kate put on 46 for the 5th wicket and Sam (18) put on 46 for sixth wicket to see us 6/156 with six overs to go.  But we could not score at the required rate to win the game.

Brandi also bowled well but it was East Torrens top order batter Mel Smith who dominated with 99 no.

The As rematch with TTG / N saw last week’s losers learn from their experiences of Sunday. This time they batted with patience and their last pair put on the 24 they needed to win.  We made 6/144 off our 50 overs.

Jess O’Reilly continued her good form with 53.  She shared a 56 run stand with Kayla McGrath (12) batting at number four.  Kayla continued her good form of the previous Sunday – batting for almost an hour.  Kylie scored 33 to take her to 522 runs for the season.

We took wickets at regular intervals with Kelly Armstrong taking   3/41.  We thought we had them at 9/120 but their last pair scored the runs.

During the innings Donna Clark passed Neesha Iles as the top wicket taker for the season (see separate blog.)

Don’t forget the Presentation evening on March 22.

WOMEN WIN SOUTHERN’S FIRST A GRADE PREMIERSHIP

The A grade Women have won a classic “rags to riches” bottom to top premiership – winning Southern’s first A grade premiership in the T20 final at Adelaide Oval.

Losing the toss and being sent in we made a competitive 107 – batting three balls short of 20 overs.  The batting was led by the consistent Kylie Rattray 43 no (41 balls) and opener Jess O’Reilly 22.  We also had handy contributions from late order batter, Kayla McGrath 9 (9) and Number 3 Georgia Weatherspoon 9 (13).

We were in trouble early losing two wickets in the first three overs. Georgia looked like she was going to set the momentum with a four in the fourth over only to be bowled two balls later.  At five overs we were 2/14 and at 10 4/34.  Jess and Kylie put on 39 to steady the innings taking us to 5/63 in the 13th over.  We lost Tabitha soon after to have us 6/65 with six overs remaining.

Kylie and Kayla McGrath put on 24 vital runs in 22 balls to take us to 87 with three overs to go.  Kylie managed to “farm” the strike to enable us to score 20 off the last 15 balls off the innings.

Her innings was marked by her traditional aggressive approach tempered by skillful short singles and an ability to bat with the tail enders. Her 43 no included five fours and 14 singles.  The role of tail enders Kayla McGrath 9 (9 balls) and Hannah Armstrong 2 (off only two balls faced of 15 in the partnership) can not be under estimated.

The last two partnerships took us from a shaky 7/76 (off 15) to a competitive 8/107. It was 31 golden runs off 27 balls.

The Northern/ TTG innings started steadily with former state players Brittany Perry and Steph Morrison scoring at just over four an over for the first seven overs.  They were 0/36 in the eighth over and looked very comfortable.  They had "seen off" openers Donna Clark and Dayna Cox who had been two of our three top wicket takers this season and looked set for a win.
Two wickets in one over swung the momentum.

Wicket keeper Kylie Rattray produced one of her “trademark” stumpings in Georgia Weatherspoon’s second over.  Standing back to the medium pacer she threw down the stumps to have Brittany Perry (16) out of her ground and get us back in the game.

Later in the same over we took the wicket of key batter Cara Fiebig.  Cara had made 245 runs for the season (running second to Kylie) at 123 runs per 100 balls. The run out was caused by a misfield and a second run on an over throw.   Dayna Cox threw down the stumps to have their danger player back in the pavilion for two.
At 2/37 in the ninth over leg spinner Kelly Armstrong was introduced with devastating effect. She took the wicket of Fielke (caught Georgia) with her fourth ball to have them 3/40 in the ninth over.

Georgia followed up in the next over with an athletic caught and bowled to have the vital wicket of former state player Neesha Iles. The Bulls were 4/41 in the tenth over and the game had swung to us.
They still had the dangerous Jess Fiebig batting.  We managed to keep pressure on “the other end” and take wickets in the ensuing three overs to have the game in our keeping.  (She  faced 13 balls for two runs.)

The fielding highlights in the last three overs were spectacular.  Tabitha Saville produced a direct hit from the boundary (60 metres) to run out top-scorer Steph Morrison (17)  and the Armstrong twins ran out Under 15 team mate Chloe Scheer (with the ball rebounding from Kelly’s leg to break the stumps.)
Fittingly Jess O’Reilly (who captained our C grade premiership six years ago) bowled the last two wickets to see us run out 60 run winners

As lose entree

The As had good entrĂ©e to the main course of Sunday’s GF with a good hit out against West Torrens.

The Eagles batted first making an impressive 267.  Donna continued her good work taking three wickets (to make her equal in the SACA wicket takers in A grade), Georgia also finished with three – cleaning up the tail.

The fielding highlights included a speccy from Shari in the gully, a good outfield catch from Georgia and two athletic catches from Tabatha.

Thanks to Brandi, Chloe and Cara who came up from the Bs to assist with the team to make sure players were well rested for Sundays GF.
 Jess in action on Sunday.
