As 10 runs short - Bs battle
In the clash of the last two T20 champions we lost to West Torrens
by 10 runs.
We took early wickets (2/9) off two overs and had the state
captain Lauren Ebsary out in the sixth over to have them 3/26.
Our overs 4-10 we held them well with Alicia Holt bowling
four overs for 12 and Tahlia McGrath two overs for seven.
But Lucy Williams (44 no) took the
score to a respectable 94.
We started well with Rachel and Tahlia setting a solid base
with 21 off five overs. The introduction
of “chinaman”* bowler Tayla Gordon slowed the run rate and we could establish
regular high scoring overs.
Donna batted very well for 32 no off 40 balls. She and Tahlia put on 16 and she and Kylie
put on 30. At 2/67 in the 16th
over we needed 28 off 24 balls but tight bowling from The Eagles thwarted our
chase.
Chloe Lyons hit out well (seven
off nine) in the last three overs – but seven an over was just too much.
The Bs had the “waterbag” trip to Salisbury.
The Bs were hit hard by illness and prior commitments . It was great to see the debut games of Natasha
Tillson (Kate’s neice) and Tammy Kennedy (Chelsea’s Mum) for their first games.
Northern Orange made 3/130 with Kate Weger taking two
wickets.
Ella Wilson continued her good form with a wicket in her
first over, batting over eight overs and taking a turn as keeper when Kate
bowled.
We replied with 43. Tayla
Smith (opening again!) batted well into the 8th over to take the
score to 31. She and Ella batted to
instructions to hold up the Northerners.
We finished with 43.

Highlights
·
Donna’s 32 no off 40 balls.
In two games this year Donna has made 44 runs - she has
scored more runs in two games than the last three full seasons (37, 34, 30) and is six runs short
of her best season 2010-11.
Her previous highest score was 20 no in C Grade in 2008.
·
Alicia Holt’s spell in the As – four overs for
12 – with only seven balls scored from in 24.
This included good flight and tempting batters to come forward to her.
·
Mums and daughters:
Tammy Kennedy joined Chelsea as our fifth Mother / daughter
combination….
She jointed Jess and Rachel O’Reilly; Cara and Nancy Allen; Linda,
Kayla and Tahlia McGrath and Sharon has fielded with Kylie. (Deb Holt tells me she had a few games with
Alicia at that other club!)
The feedback from our coaching
sessions at Reynella has been very positive from both coaches and players.
Quotes of the week
“… and she only bowled one bad ball….” Twice within five minutes from two different people.
“… I just want to hear that lovely Irish accent….”

Trip to Northern.....
I think we have had four trips
with B and the “C” grade over the last three seasons. Not sure I can recall a Northern visit
South????

Bs back in action - As down by three wickets
It was great to see the Bs back in action this week – after missing
last year and having only one of the previous team which took the field two
seasons ago (Nugget).
After a couple of late withdrawals and plenty of phone calls
we were able to start with 10 players in Bs… Natasha Tillson (Kate’s niece),
Chelsea Kennedy and Ella Wilson all debuted at the age of 11.
We welcomed Darren Lehmann Academy member Anna Kerrison from Ireland, Muskan Kaur and of course Sarah Taylor.
The Bs batted first making a competitive 76 off the slow
running Park 23. We had good
contributions from Rachel Dickinson (7) and Bridee Tonkin (10) in their first B
grade games. But the innings was anchored by Anna Kerrison who made a well-constructed
22 no off 39 balls. Her off side shots
were great, but she found the lack of pace of the bowlers difficult for fluent
stroke play.
Prospect passed us two down.
Chelsea Kennedy took her first wicket for the club.
The As played at Eric Sutton Oval which, as usual, kept low
and deteriorated as the afternoon progressed.
We batted first - batting all but our 50 overs. Rachael Greenshields (11) and T Mac (41) gave
us their usual solid start. But their
loss at 67 in the 19th over saw us lose momentum – until a late
flourish from Cara (7), Donna (11) and Brandi (8no) saw us make 163.
We took wickets at 37 (7th over) and 61 (11th)
but state rep Sam Betts (33) and former
state player Tamara Clapton (67no) saw them to 132 with plenty of wickets
left. We caused a mini collapse taking
4/20 (with wickets to the McGrath sisters and two to Alicia Holt) but they
scored the runs with 17 overs to spare.
Tahlia bowled well with 2/32 off 10 and sister Kayla took
1/5 off six.
*****************************************************************************
Highlights of the
weekend…..
1. The first two shots played by Anna Kerrison were the most
delicate of late cuts… almost from the wicketkeeper’s gloves…
2. Any time you see Sarah Taylor wicketkeep…. It is like
watching a surgeon at work. She stood up
to the opening bowler for the state – Tahlia McGrath. Her glovework on a pitch which was “up and
down” was exquisite. Had it not been for
an umpire ….she would have had three stumpings….. She will certainly
keep the square leg umpires on their toes this year!
3. The debut of Ella Wilson who scored 4 no from 16 balls,
fielded well, bowled an over of medium pace and wicketkept for the Bs!!!

Sarah Taylor to play for Stingrays
Current ICC T20 Player of the Year Sarah Taylor will play with us this season. She joins us as part of her arrangements to play for the SA Scorpions in the Women's National League. She is the England Wicketkeeper and is regarded as the being "the best keeper in England male or female".
She created a controversy in the hallowed halls of the MCC when she and fellow international Holly Colvin caused concern as they dominated the senior boys competition for their High School in 2006!
Her accomplishments include the youngest player to score 1,000 ODI runs (aged 19), ICC T20 Player of the Year 2012, 2013 and a member of the England team which retained The Ashes in Australia earlier this year.
This weekend she is assisting with our clinics at Reynella Oval 9 am Saturday and plays her first game for the Stingrays on Sunday at Port Reserve.
