T MAC CONTINUES GOOD FORM BS CLOSE….WELCOME KATE!

Both teams were "in with a chance" in games over the weekend.
The As battled to score more than two an over (103 off 50)  against a very experienced and tight Northern attack.  The best partnership was between Jess O’Reilly and T Mac with 41.  The innings punctuated by a 45 minute rain break.
We took early wickets to have them under pressure at 5/70 and if an LB had gone our way we may have had  a  chance.  But recently retired state player Neesha Iles put on 36 for the sixth wicket  to see them home in the 25th over.
Both Kate Matonia 2/13 and Alicia Holt 1/14 bowled tightly.
At Bailey Reserve the Bs chased 97. Rachael Dickinson took the only wicket, but Chelsea Kennedy bowled her quota of overs for 15 runs.
We  put on their best  batting performance since Round one. Anna Kerrison (30) and  Rachael Dickinson (7) set a good base with 23 for first wicket.  Anna   batted into the last over for 30 and she and Kate Weger (23 off 27) put on 39. At one stage we were 1/62  in the 15th over (needing 35 off 36 balls with two batters set).  We finished 23 runs short.
Kate Matonia comes to us from West Torrens.  She is well known to our indoor players as she plays in the Morphett Vale Sharks during the winter.  She has also played Indoor cricket for Victoria and in her early years of cricket she captained the Flinders Uni C grade to a premiership. (coached by Kempey).

Highlights
·         T Mac innings 54 this season she has had scores of  111, 16  and 41.  Last year she had  nine scores of 20 or more  out of 13.  This year she is turning starts into big scores.
·         Alicia Holt bowled to the Australian and West Indian teams in the nets in preparation for the game they played last Wednesday.
·         Anna runs and bowling!!!!! (an innings punctuated with her trademark off side shots... with some aggression and "big shots".  Anna had a great week up in the Flinders Ranges with the dust and flies!!!

·         The attendance at the Stingray Cup… 9 players / friends or Mums….thanks to all who attended we had 9 reps out of  the 24 members we have.

Quote of the week
·         “If this happened in England you’d never play….” With reference to the rain.
·         A note on the form guide to the Stringray Cup…. TAYLOR’S TRIUMPH… the only international player to be a member of a World Cup winning side and play for the Stingrays!!!!

Lowlights
Sarah’s run out... but don't ask her...

Up coming December 10 Anna and Sarah speaking at the Cricket Lovers. At the moment we have seven Stingrays reps.  If you would like to come along see Kempey.

T MAC TON IN RUN FEAST

Tahlia McGrath is the first A grade Century maker for  the Southern Women’s team.
Her 111 represents her PB and our first century in our 57th game of 50 over cricket.
The innings took126 balls and included 15 fours.
She opening the innings, with the loss of Rachael Greenshields at 4 (first over) and Sarah Taylor 16 (2/30) in the 5th over she batted with Donna Clark for the next 27 overs putting on 110 runs.
Despite the 100 we lost with State Captain Lauren Ebsary making 162 no.
In quest of 287 we finished 5/256 making our highest score ever.
We had The Eagles 2/76 in the 17th over – but a 120 run third wicket stand took the score to 194 in the 36th.  Three 35 plus partnerships took them to 287.
Kayla McGrath  (welcome back after a volleyball trip to Port Augusta!) took the figures with 2/39 off 10 and sister T Mac 1/31 off 10 to be the most economic.
287  looked even more imposing as we lost two early wickets to be 2/30 after four overs.
Donna (35 off 86) and Tahlia steadied the innings to have us 2/140 in the 31st and only 10 runs off the comparative score in the Torrens innings.  But the return of Lauren Ebsary to the bowling crease with three of her overs going for only three runs slowed the run chase to make it “a bridge too far.”
Kylie batted (and battered) her way back to form with 48 no off 47 balls including four trademark sixes.
Chloe continued her “red ink” form putting on 41 with Kylie in the last 36 balls.
**
Notes on Tahlia’s innings
IN DOING SO SHE ACHIEVED HER
PB
Previous best 84 v West Torrens at Bice 2012
Her first 100 partnership – previous best 80 with sister last year against Sturt 2012
With Sarah Taylor after her 100!

The Bs batted all but their 20 overs.
We found Bice Oval very difficult to score (we hit no boundaries) making 45.  Cara Allen scored a well made 15.  Kate batted 32 balls for five finding scoring hard with the lack of pace of the bowlers.
Ella Wilson scored four including a pull shot for two.
But we could not put together long partnerships.
They scored the runs with 10 overs to spare.  Bridee Tonkin took a wicket and fielded very well.
Our innings finished with a Hat Trick to Yolanda Winson taking Cara, Chelsea and Serena to finish the innings.

We were the state winners of the Active After School "Creative Entry by a club" in a competition held by this National Organisation.  This Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) group has supported schools and OSHS with various sports offered to these organisations to encourage young people to become involved in sport.
We have been involved in this since it started 10 years ago.
We run a series of Milo In2 Cricket activities over the seven one hour sessions.

Parts our entry read
"As a District Cricket Club we take our responsibility to the wider community very seriously.  Through the Active After Schools Program we have been able to provide the opportunities for participants to get a taste of the game.  "

"The coaches have been on a learning curve which has seen them become leaders of small groups and running complete sessions on their own.
.˜
It has seen them develop as mature sports people and take on responsibilities which mean they are giving back to the game.  Skills such as reliability, resilience  and organisational skills."

And seen them featured on national the national television program TOTALLY WILD

As 10 runs short - Bs battle

In the clash of the last two T20 champions we lost to West Torrens by 10 runs.
We took early wickets (2/9) off two overs and had the state captain Lauren Ebsary out in the sixth over to have them 3/26.
Our overs 4-10 we held them well with Alicia Holt bowling four overs for 12 and Tahlia McGrath two overs for seven.
But Lucy Williams (44 no) took the score to a respectable 94.
We started well with Rachel and Tahlia setting a solid base with 21 off five overs.  The introduction of “chinaman”* bowler Tayla Gordon slowed the run rate and we could establish regular high scoring overs.
Donna batted very well for 32 no off 40 balls.  She and Tahlia put on 16 and she and Kylie put on 30.  At 2/67 in the 16th over we needed 28 off 24 balls but tight bowling from The Eagles thwarted our chase.
Chloe Lyons hit out well (seven off nine) in the last three overs – but seven an over was just too much.

The Bs had the “waterbag” trip to Salisbury.
The Bs were hit hard by illness and prior commitments .  It was great to see the debut games of Natasha Tillson (Kate’s neice) and Tammy Kennedy (Chelsea’s Mum) for their first games.
Northern Orange made 3/130 with Kate Weger taking two wickets.
Ella Wilson continued her good form with a wicket in her first over, batting over eight overs and taking a turn as keeper when Kate bowled.
We replied with 43.  Tayla Smith (opening again!) batted well into the 8th over to take the score to 31.  She and Ella batted to instructions to hold up the Northerners.
We finished with 43.
·         “Chinaman” a left arm leg spinner – the back of the hand bowler with a wrong un
Highlights
·         Donna’s 32 no off 40 balls.
In two games this year Donna has made 44 runs - she has scored more runs in two games than the last three full seasons (37, 34, 30) and is six runs short of her best season 2010-11.
Her previous highest score was 20 no in C  Grade in 2008.
·         Alicia Holt’s spell in the As – four overs for 12 – with only seven balls scored from in 24.  This included good flight and tempting batters to come forward to her.
·         Mums and daughters:
Tammy Kennedy joined Chelsea as our fifth Mother / daughter combination….
She jointed Jess and Rachel O’Reilly; Cara and Nancy Allen; Linda, Kayla and Tahlia McGrath and Sharon has fielded with Kylie.  (Deb Holt tells me she had a few games with Alicia at that other club!)
The feedback from our coaching sessions at Reynella has been very positive from both coaches and players.

Quotes of the week
“… and she only bowled one bad ball….” Twice  within five minutes from two different people.
“… I just want to hear that lovely Irish accent….”

Lowlights
Trip to Northern.....

I think we have had four trips with B and the “C” grade over the last three seasons.  Not sure I can recall a Northern visit South????

Bs back in action - As down by three wickets

It was great to see the Bs back in action this week – after missing last year and having only one of the previous team which took the field two seasons ago (Nugget).
After a couple of late withdrawals and plenty of phone calls we were able to start with 10 players in Bs… Natasha Tillson (Kate’s niece), Chelsea Kennedy and Ella Wilson all debuted at the age of 11.

We welcomed Darren Lehmann Academy member Anna Kerrison from Ireland, Muskan Kaur and of course Sarah Taylor.
The Bs batted first making a competitive 76 off the slow running Park 23.  We had good contributions from  Rachel Dickinson  (7) and Bridee Tonkin (10) in their first B grade games. But the innings was anchored by Anna Kerrison who made a well-constructed 22 no off 39 balls.  Her off side shots were great, but she found the lack of pace of the bowlers difficult for fluent stroke play.
Prospect passed us two down.  Chelsea Kennedy took her first wicket for the club.

The As played at Eric Sutton Oval which, as usual, kept low and deteriorated as the afternoon progressed.
We batted first - batting all but our 50 overs.  Rachael Greenshields (11) and T Mac (41) gave us their usual solid start.  But their loss at 67 in the 19th over saw us lose momentum – until a late flourish from Cara (7), Donna (11) and Brandi (8no) saw us make 163.
We took wickets at 37 (7th over) and 61 (11th) but state rep Sam Betts  (33) and former state player Tamara Clapton (67no) saw them to 132 with plenty of wickets left.  We caused a mini collapse taking 4/20 (with wickets to the McGrath sisters and two to Alicia Holt) but they scored the runs with 17 overs to spare.
Tahlia bowled well with 2/32 off 10 and sister Kayla took 1/5 off six.

*****************************************************************************
Highlights of the weekend…..
1. The first two shots played by Anna Kerrison were the most delicate of late cuts… almost from the wicketkeeper’s gloves…
2. Any time you see Sarah Taylor wicketkeep…. It is like watching a surgeon at work.  She stood up to the opening bowler for the state – Tahlia McGrath.  Her glovework on a pitch which was “up and down” was exquisite.  Had it not been for an umpire ….she would have had three stumpings….. She will certainly

keep the square leg umpires on their toes this year!
3. The debut of Ella Wilson who scored 4 no from 16 balls, fielded well, bowled an over of medium pace and wicketkept for the Bs!!!

4. First gamer Chelsea Kennedy who has not had her playing top off for at least three days and nights!

Anna Kerrison batting for Ireland Under 17s.
