As start the season with a win “Old ducks" save outright in Bs

The A grade started 2010-11 with a very impressive 35 run win over Northern.

The batting was highlighted with captain Jess O'Reilly scoring her third 50 in  row (two in her last two games last season) and Dayna Cox scoring her first A grade 50.  These two young "veterans" – both in their fifth season of senior cricket at 17 put on 88 as we amassed an A grade record of 6/226 off our 50 overs.

They were well supported in the last few overs by Marg Hay, Nuggett and Donna Clark who scored better than a run a ball over the last six overs.

Northern started well with 117 off the first 22 – but with a combination of good fielding, accurate bowling and  key wickets we held them to 9/199.  Marg Hay took the figures with 4/30 off 10 overs and Brandi Ongley taking two catches in her A grade debut were highlights.

The other obvious highlight was the debut of  keeper Kayla McGrath.  At 11 we know Kayla is the youngest A grader for Southern and we are checking on SACA ? SAWCA records.

The Bs started well with wickets in the first two overs – having Northern 2/5 – but their middle order and tail enders kept us in the field for the full 40 overs making 150.
Kayla bowled well in her A grade debut for Southern taking 2/19.  But the highlight was two superb catches from Kelly Armstrong.

Our batting was soon in big trouble – after Kayla was spectacularly run out off a freakish touched run out we were facing outright defeat at 4.45 with 8 down for 20.  But solid defence from first Nikki Moyle (18 balls) and the old hands of marg Jude and Joy Brown we batted until 5.44 pm saving outright loss and batting 32 overs.  During the hour long last wicket stand the opposition even used the "old duck" term on many occasions – increasing the determination of our tail-end batters.

This week a double header T20 with the Bs at 12 noon and As at 3pm at Bice.  We expect to have plenty of more players available this week..(A big thank you to all who assisted this week.)  C grade game start on October 24.
