As finals chances still alive Cs still need other results to go our way

The A grade win over Northern keeps our chances of making the finals alive.  Should we beat Tea Tree Gully this week we should make it.  (Our two contenders Port and Northern play the following weekend when we have the bye – one of them will lose!).

The As batted first against Northern (who we had beaten earlier in the season.) Rachael Greenshields gave us a good start with 15 (PB for the season). Wickets to state rep Cara Feibig had us in trouble being 6/42 in the 19th over.

But the "tail wagged" to get us to 142.  Marg Hay used all her experience to make her best score for Southern – 72.  She batted for almost two hours taking us from a perilous 3/27 to 9/140.  She hit 10 fours and shared match-winning partnerships with Courtney Brideson (13) (partnership 47 for the 7th wicket); Donna Clark (9) (partnership of 35 for the 8th wicket) and Kameni Gilligan (2no) (partnership of 16 for the 9th wicket).  The last four wickets put on 100 to frustrate Northern and help us to bat 49 of our allotted 50 overs.

We took wickets at regular intervals with Northern's best partnership being 17.  Dayna had the figures with 2/4 off three overs – being well supported by Jess who took 2/10 – including four maidens in seven overs.

The Bs batted hard to save outright points against top spot contender Sturt.  Sturt batted first in the heat of the day to amass 245 with number four batter Morgan Tucker making 101.  Brandi Ongley took two early wickets and finished with a PB of 3/33.

We batted all but three of our overs with solid batting from Jess Vincent, Kayla McGrath, Joy Brown and Linda Anderson.

The Cs battled hard against top team Tea Tree Gully.  The Gullies batted first making 135.  Hannah Armstrong took an early wicket (to take her tally to 11 for the season) but they scored at over six an over to bat us out of the game.  Tianna Muirhead took the figures with 2/41 off three overs.

We lost early wickets to be 4/19 in the seventh over.  But a 60 run stand between Marg Jude (29 retired) and Hannah Armstrong (22 no) made our score respectable.

STOP PRESS

With the Sturt beating Northern we need win our last two (one against Sturt) and  rely on other results going our way to make the finals.

It was great to see Linda Anderson resuming this week and Nicky Koritsa played in the Cs for her annual "two game" stint.  She resumes her state Korfball duties in a fortnight.

 This week:

The As play TTG at Helen Black, the Bs play Port at Eric Sutton (likely to change) on Saturday and the Cs Sturt at Park 25 (time likely to be 3pm.)

Kelly wins Powerade Cricketer of the Round

 FROM THE SACA WEBSITE

Meanwhile, following the Christmas break and abandoned matches due to heat, last Sunday was the first hit out for a number of weeks for the Powerade Twenty20 Cup. Kelly Armstrong of Southern District received a late Christmas present as she has been awarded the Powerade Junior Player of the Round for her efforts in the last round game between Southern District and Northern Districts.

Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat, which proved to be a good decision as the Jets posted 6/105 from their 20 overs. Kelly was able to bowl accurately in windy conditions and took two wickets in her first spell and then followed it up by taking a further two wickets in her second spell. In the end, Kelly collected remarkable figures of 4/2 from her allotted four overs.

Southern District's run chase started shakily, slipping to 4/23 before Kelly came in to bat and scored 31 runs from 38 deliveries. Her 35 minute stay at the crease included seven boundaries and was her highest ever score. Unfortunately for the Stingrays, the team fell short, posting 84 runs from their allotted 20 overs.
Cricket talent must run in the family as Armstrong's twin sister, Hannah, won the award in round six after taking 4/5 against Port Adelaide.

As and Bs washed out Cs lose to Kensington

On what was supposed to be our biggest weekend of cricket with five games scheduled – we only played one on a hard wicket at Park 25.

The 50 mls of rain on Friday meant curators could not prepare wickets for Saturday or Sundays matches.

The Cs lost to Kensington – but welcomed Hannah Baker to our ranks.  Hannah fielded very well missing one very difficult catch and taking another "blinder!" and finished 6no (including one boundary.)

Kensys batted first making 90. Tianna (five wickets for the season) and Hannah Armstrong (10 wickets for the season) took wickets and Hannah Armstrong and Kayla McGrath combined for a run out.

Hannah Armstrong and Kayla McGrath also combined for the best partnership of the innings of 20.

This week the

As play Northern at Helen Black Saturday (two games to the finals)

Bs play Sturt at Bailey on Saturday (three games to the finals)

Cs play TTG at Gordon Brown on Sunday ( three games to the finals)

C’s win – A and B grade losses - Bangka memorial weekend

The C grade continued their good form over Port completing three wins out of three for the season.

Batting first we made 80 off our 20 overs with Hannah Armstrong making her maiden "30" for the season.  Opening the batting she scored her runs at a run a ball with six fours.

She was well supported by Kayla McGrath (41 run partnership) and sister Kelly (seven runs).  We had the Port side in early trouble with a run out in the second over and wickets to Kayla McGrath and Kelly Armstrong in the fourth and eighth over.

Kayla took the prize wicket bowling Port top run scorer of recent seasons Sonia Mangelson ( her sister Tahlia dismissed her in similar fashion two years ago!!!!)

Kayla bowled very accurately to finish with 1/1 off four overs (that run was a wide – which caused a run out!)

The A grade T 20 game saw a good 7th wicket stand between Courtney Brideson and Marg Hay – which put on 28 to give us 52 off our 20 overs.  West Torrens scored the runs with 10 overs to spare.

The result was similar in the B grade as the Eagles set us 104 off  20 overs.  We made 38 with Rachael Greenshields making a solid 14.

A big thank you to the Mums who filled in as fielders in the Torrens innings as we had two late withdrawals.

BANGKA SUNDAY

Thanks to Courtney Brideson, Kayla  and Tahlia McGrath and Nicky Moyle who represented Southern and their state teams at the annual Bangka Sunday Memorial Service.

The service is held at the SA Women's Memorial Playing fields every February to remember the Australia nurses who were killed in the Bangka Straits on February 14 1942.  The Playing Fields were set up in their memory.

It's a busy weekend next weekend with the A and B grade playing Saturday and Sunday.  It's the annual Febluary Round and Febluary 20 is the catch up T20 round for the Round one game which was washed out.

KELLY HAS DAY OUT

Kelly Armstrong had "a day out" in the Cs game against Northern.

Bowling medium pacers she bowled very well in the windy conditions taking 4/2 off four overs (including one no ball).  Having put in a PB with the ball she backed it up with a run-a-ball 31 in our innings of 84 batting at Number four.  The performance earned her a Powerade Cricketer of the Week nomination.

The Cs failed by 21 runs to chase Northern's 105.  The best partnership was a 47 run stand between Kelly and Tianna Muirhead.

In the Northern innings Kayla McGrath and Amy White took a wicket each.

The As went held Kensington to 69 off 20 overs with Jess O'Reilly taking 2/12 with economic support from Courtney Brideson 1/6 off three and Tahlia McGrath 1/6 off two overs.

We could not establish any partnerships over 11 and were dismissed for 37.

The Bs had a similar problem – batting first we made 25 against Sturt – Donna Clark took their only wicket as they passed us in the 12th over.
