Alecia’s Michelle, Spirit of the game shown in Bs, SCORPS RUNNERS UP TO NSW, MUM OUTSCORES DAUGHTER and SON !!!

The highlights of this week’s games came from the Bs again this week.
Alecia Holt, playing her first B grade game for the season complete a PB of 5/19.  She completed her first “Michelle” with two wickets in her first spell and three in six balls across her 6th and 7th over. Four where bowled and one lbw.  She was also excellent in the field and made a patient 9 off 18 balls.

We took three early wickets having The Eagles 3/29 in the 10th over (including the wicket of former stae and Australian batter Caroline Ward.)  But a 124 run fourth wicket stand took the game away from us.  They finished with 181.
Nikki Moyle took her first stumping for her career as a keeper and Ella Wilson bowled economically for 0/17 off six overs.
Kaitlin Heath also took her first senior wicket with the assistance of some sharp work from wicket keeper captain Kate Weger.
Chloe Lyons (19) and Alecia Holt (9) gave us a solid platform with 29 in the first nine overs.  There were some significant milestones for players in the latter part of our innings.  Kaitlyn Heath, Zoe Reynolds (on debut), Serena Ongley and Natasha Tillson all scored their first runs for the club.
Our “mum” Jacqui Wilson  4 no not only outscored daughter Ella, but son Angus who scored one for the Under 14 Whites!!!!
Due credit must go to the West Torrens team who were well aware of our situation with new players to the game.  (we had six players under the age of 12) and gave our youngsters a chance to have success early in their cricketing careers.
We now have THREE PLAYERS from our Reynella Oval coaching with Zoe Reynolds joining Kaitlyn Heath (2nd game) and Chelsea Kennedy from this program.
A big thank you to the A graders who came back after their game to assist with the warm ups of our new players.
The As batted first against Port making 53.  Kylie topscored with 18 no.  Cara made 9.  Port scored the runs in 6.2 overs.
We welcome back the McGrath sisters in the next few weeks from state duties.

This week the Bs venture to Price Memorial to play Sturt.
The As may have a  50 over catch up game from the 22nd of November which was washed out.  It will depend on whether other clubs support the move.

State news
The Scorpions made it to the National Grand Final with a spirited win on Friday against Queensland.  Tahlia took a wicket as we dismissed them for 90.  She supported spearhead Megan Schutt (four wickets) in her final spell.
She also made a valuable contribution of 15 off 16 balls (second top score) as we chased the runs.  But the mainstay of the SA innings was Sarah Taylor who “got the job done” with a patient 21 no off  50 balls to see us home.

There was to be no fairy tale in the GF with the NSW side winning by 143 runs.

Quiz night
Thanks to all involved in our fourth annual quiz night.  There were over 75 paid attendees and over 100 at various stages in the evening.
B Mac, TCG, Donna and Rachael did a great job behind the scenes and Bowey was a great compere.
We had an excellent representation from all parts of the club and raised over $1600.

“ALWAYS BEWARE THE INJURED BATTER!”

Nicole “Nugget” Adams played one her best innings for Southern with an unbeaten 41 no off 98 balls.  Batting with a repairs from a recently broken thumb which she re-injured a day before the game she batted with great determination and concentration.

Coming in at 3/18 she batted 100 minutes as we ended our innings all out for 91 in the 39th over.
Northern batted first making 8/126 off their 40 overs.  Bridee Tonkin continued her good form (and her second three wicket haul in consecutive games) to finish with career best figures f 3/16 off eight overs.

We held them in the last 10 overs to only 27 runs.  Nugget also chimed in with 2/10 off six overs.
With our first five batters back in the shed for 18 Nugget and Ella Wilson (PB 10 off 49 balls 60 minutes) put on 49 to give is a small chance of scoring the runs.  We were 5/68 with 61 needed off 10 overs.  We scored five an over for the next three overs – but it was just out of reach.  Nikki Moyle gave good support with a 22 runs stand.
*** a cheer went through the B graders as we edged our way past 44!!!!

The As dismissed Australian rep Megan Schutt with the second ball of the second over, but that was the best news all day.  Sturt made 114 with the wickets shared between Alicia, Tahlia, Chloe and Rachel.  Megan had her revenge on Tahlia with T Mac scoring her first duck for over two seasons!
We were dismissed for 44 with Jess top scoring with 12.

Watch and listen for news of this weekend.  The Scorpions play on Friday and many members of the SA Cricketing community are venturing interstate for the game.  This includes members of opposition teams.  The final of the T 20 comp was due to be held on Adelaide Oval on Monday and three games are scheduled on Sunday.
There is a meeting with SACA Monday evening to resolve the problem.

Debuts this weekend
Welcome to Jennie Weinheimer who played her first B grade game and an equally warm welcome to Kaitlyn Heath.  Kaitlyn is the second player to come through our coaching at Reynella Oval.   Kaitlyn debuted at the age of 10 and 62 days.  She is not the youngest to debut in B grade.  That belongs to Kayla McGrath who was 9 years and 332 days.

Oldest debut game B grade Marg Jude who was 71 years 77 days!
She also debuted in A grade aged 72 years 174 days!!!

STATE NEWS

No cricket over the weekend for Southern due to the rain.
The rain on Thursday and persistent rain on Saturday prevented the preparation of Christies High and Gordon Brown Ovals for Sunday’s games.
The only cricket was SA Scorpions games played on Adelaide No2 (Sunday) and Adelaide Oval before the Strikers game on Monday.
The normal pattern of games (Fri – T20, Sat 50 over and Sun T20) was changed to accommodate a curtain raiser for the Men’s T20 on Monday evening.
The Scorpions win on Sunday put them clearly in the finals (for the first time since 2007-08) on their own merit.  They had already qualified, due to other results, but the win meant they finished third – with a game against Queensland in Brisbane.
In the NSW innings of 236 (48.5 overs) Tahlia took the last two wickets in her second spell to finish with 2/51 of 6.5 overs. Sarah took a stumping.  In the SA chase Sarah batted No 3 making 44 off 56 and sharing and 83 run stand with opener Teagan McPharlin (65) and give us a good base at 2/146 in the 29th. Tahlia made 9 off 15 seeing SA 5/206 in the 42nd.  Captain Lauren Ebsary 50 no saw  SA home in the 49th over.

The first of the T20 games was abandoned.  The second saw Sarah top score with 40 off 40 balls as we scored 6/104.  In the run chase NSW scored the 46 they needed in a rain affected game.

This week weather permitting the As play Sturt at Bice in a T20 and the Bs play one of the Northern teams at Salisbury (1pm start.)

 COACHES REPORT (Barry McGrath)
Firstly, it is really pleasing to have a B grade again this season.  This is really important for developing new players and club depth.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making this happen and of course, to these players and their families.  From the B grade games I've seen and the reports I've heard, we have some future stars in this group, which is very exciting.

Other highlights have been welcoming our two internationals.  Having Sarah and Anna play at Southern has been great for our club and squad.  They have fitted in well and continue to impress in games.  In particular, Sarah's presence as one of the world's best cricketers around our A grade has been invaluable.

And while on welcomes, Alecia has joined us this season and quickly established herself as an important A grade player.  Well done Alecia and welcome.

Our core group of Southern players continue to work hard for our club.  Many not only play each week but also put in many extra hours around the club for important tasks such as the committee, fundraising, coaching and generally promoting us.  A big thank you to Donna, Jess, Tayla, Kylie, Rachael and all others that have been contributing.

On field, both sides have just the one win but there have also been many other close and competitive games.  From my spot pacing around the boundary, our batting application has

been pleasing.  We are valuing our wicket more this season with very few collapses.  Donna in particular has taken the next step with her batting and Tahlia becoming our first A grade centurion on a day that we also made our best A grade score (250+) were pleasing milestones.

If we are to bridge the gap and secure more wins, the following are the areas we need to work on:
  • Running between the wickets.  We give up 20-30 runs per game here.
  • Rotating the strike.  Being more alert for quick singles and exploiting gaps.
  • Bowling in consistent areas.  Probably only Alecia and Tahlia have been doing this well enough.
  • Ground fielding.  To be honest, we haven't been at A grade standard yet.

So a big happy new year to all Stingrays players, families and supporters.  I'm hopeful we can finish this season with some more wins, milestones and a general improvement in the above areas.

Finally, good luck to Kayla who heads off to Ballarat shortly for the U18 Nationals.  Kayla is the club's sole under age state representative this season.

Cheers,
Barry

Active After School News
The Active After School Program has finished and the new program will not start until Term 3 2015.   We have been involved in these clinics since it started in 2006.  We have used over 30 coaches and estimate we have coached over 600 participants.

We won $250 worth of gear from Hart Equipment as “The most creative entry from SA.”  We put together a Prezi with the emphasis on the role of coaches in the process of developing young players. Extract from our entry:
“… we believe as a club we are teaching the next generation of coaches to carry on teaching these skills for the rest of their lives.
  Donna wins SACA Volunteers Award
Donna Clark won the SACA volunteers regional award for the Southern Metro area.
 Part of Donna's entry included:

“  She is a coach, a volunteer, a member of committees, role model and embraces Cricket Australia’s vision to be Australia’s favourite sport.  She is always keen to pass on her enthusiasm for the game to the next generation of cricketers.....

Donna not only sets an example with her coaching – but she is very willing to promote the Cricket in a variety of mediums (blogs, school assemblies, national TV programs and publicity shots for The Messenger and School Newsletters.)
She sees the issue of retention of players very important to the sustainable growth of the game.  She is very good at welcoming new players and parents to the club.....   As part of this she works one on one with young players new to the club.  She willing offers her coaching expertise working with female players in the 10-15 age group.  This gives her an opportunity to get to know the new players and in turn gives them a role model.”

(Southern won this award for the last two years – Donna 2014 and Trish Pinder 2013.)

State news

The Scorpions look like they will be semi finalists in the 50 over competition. SA beat Tasmania to go two games clear in fourth spot with one to play.
From a Southern viewpoint Tahlia and Sarah had good games.  Sarah completed five dismissals as a keeper with one catch and four stumpings.  Two of the stumpings were off opening bowler Megan Schutt and our own T Mac.
Tahlia took the last wicket bowling “at the death” and bowled in the middle of the innings. She finished with 1/28 off 8.3 overs.

Sarah made six off 22 balls in the early stages of our innings. Tahlia came in at the loss of her wicket (4/32) and played a steady innings which secured the win.  She made 31 off 80 balls and shared 25, 36 and 24 run partnerships to see SA 28 runs from victory.  We scored the win in the 45th over.

From Cricket Australia website…

Then they  (Tasmania) came out and bowled extremely well to the SA Scorpions and looked very much on top taking many early wickets but McGrath dug in and made an impressive 32 runs with good back up from Wellington and then dragged them back in the game again…
