COACHES REPORT (Barry
McGrath)
Firstly, it is really
pleasing to have a B grade again this season. This is really important
for developing new players and club depth.
A big thank you to everyone involved in making
this happen and of course, to these players and their families. From the
B grade games I've seen and the reports I've heard, we have some future
stars in this group, which is very exciting.
Other highlights have been welcoming our two
internationals. Having Sarah and Anna play at Southern has been great for
our club and squad. They have fitted in well and continue to impress in
games. In particular, Sarah's presence as one of the world's
best cricketers around our A grade has been invaluable.
And while on welcomes, Alecia has joined
us this season and quickly established herself as an important A
grade player. Well done Alecia and welcome.
Our core group of Southern players continue to
work hard for our club. Many not only play each week but also put in many
extra hours around the club for important tasks such as the committee,
fundraising, coaching and generally promoting us. A big thank you to
Donna, Jess, Tayla, Kylie, Rachael and all others that have been contributing.
On field, both sides have just the one win but
there have also been many other close and competitive games. From my
spot pacing around the boundary, our batting application has
been pleasing. We are valuing our
wicket more this season with very few collapses. Donna in particular
has taken the next step with her batting and Tahlia becoming
our first A grade centurion on a day that we also made our best A
grade score (250+) were pleasing milestones.
If we are to bridge the gap and secure more
wins, the following are the areas we need to work on:
- Running
between the wickets. We give up 20-30 runs per game here.
- Rotating
the strike. Being more alert for quick singles and exploiting gaps.
- Bowling
in consistent areas. Probably only Alecia and Tahlia have been doing
this well enough.
- Ground
fielding. To be honest, we haven't been at A grade standard yet.
So a big happy new year to all Stingrays
players, families and supporters. I'm hopeful we can finish this season
with some more wins, milestones and a general improvement in the above areas.
Finally, good luck to Kayla who heads off
to Ballarat shortly for the U18 Nationals. Kayla is the club's sole under
age state representative this season.
Cheers,
Barry

We
have also welcomed Alicia Holt who has bowled very well in both forms of the
game. Bowling in combination with T Mac
she has been able to peg back scoring rates and give us opportunities to take
wickets.

Kate Matonia, Ruby Richards, Depali Khanna and Muskan Kaura have played

Active After School News
The Active After School Program has
finished and the new program will not start until Term 3 2015. We have been involved in these clinics since
it started in 2006. We have used over 30
coaches and estimate we have coached over 600 participants.
We won $250 worth of gear from Hart
Equipment as “The most creative entry from SA.”
We put together a Prezi with the emphasis on the role of coaches in the
process of developing young players. Extract from our entry:
“… we believe as a club we are teaching the next generation of
coaches to carry on teaching these skills for the rest of their
lives.”
Donna
wins SACA Volunteers Award
Donna Clark won the SACA volunteers
regional award for the Southern Metro area.
Part of Donna's entry
included:
“ She is a coach, a volunteer, a member
of committees, role model and embraces Cricket Australia’s vision to be
Australia’s favourite sport. She is always keen to pass on her enthusiasm
for the game to the next generation of cricketers.....
Donna not only sets an example with her coaching – but she is
very willing to promote the Cricket in a variety of mediums (blogs, school
assemblies, national TV programs and publicity shots for The Messenger and
School Newsletters.)
She sees the issue of retention of
players very important to the sustainable growth of the game. She is very
good at welcoming new players and parents to the club..... As part
of this she works one on one with young players new to the club. She
willing offers her coaching expertise working with female players in the 10-15
age group. This gives her an opportunity to get to know the new players
and in turn gives them a role model.”
(Southern won this award for the last
two years – Donna 2014 and Trish Pinder 2013.)
