The A grade continue their winning form this week defeating last year’s grand finalists West Torrens
in a hard fought match at Christies High.
As usual Christies played slowly – but due credit to our
batters we batted our 50 overs for the fourth time for the season. This time making 6/157. The innings was anchored by Jess O’Reilly who
went in at the end of the first over and batted the rest of the innings for 64
no. (This continues her good form over West Torrens as she carried her bat for
52 no in the T20 game earlier in the season.)
She was involved in two key partnerships; 50 for the third
wicket with Dayna Cox (14) which steadied the innings and 84 with Kylie Rattray
(43) to give us the upper hand.
Jess faced 133 balls hitting six 4s and a six in two hours.
Kylie’s 43 take her to 311 runs for the season across the
two competitions at 44.38 per innings.
We made early in roads into the Eagles innings having them
2/22 in the 7th over (with state players Moritz and Oakenfold
out.) The big stumbling block was always
going to be the state captain Lauren Ebsary who threatened to do what Jess had
done for Southern.
At one stage West Torrens were 2/80 in the 23rd
over (well ahead of Southern’s 3/64).
But the wickets of L Williams at 80 and Ebsary at 86 put us back in the
game. We bowled and fielded well in the middle stages of the innings to squeeze
the required rate from 2.8 per over out to over five.
Jess continued her good work with the ball taking 1/15 off
her ten overs. Tahlia took the key
wickets of L Williams and her state captain Lauren Ebsary to take the figures
with 3/19, Dayna took 3/34 and Donna Clark continued her good form with 2/24.Georgia Weatherspoon fielded superbly taking two sharp catches.
The win takes us into the four for the first time for the season in the long form of the game.
Congratulations to Sam Dowling who played her first A grade
game. Sam played in the first Southern
teams with Jess O’Reilly.
With our Bye in the A T20s this
weekend we should have a clearer idea of our finals position as teams three and
four play each other.
In state news the U15s have won three and lost two of their
games – they look like they are in a fight for second spot with Victoria who
they beat in the minor round. So a win over WA on Monday should see them in the
GF Tuesday.
Highlights from our players have included
Tabitha Saville 40 v Queensland
Kelly Armstrong's 9 wickets including 3/9 v
Victoria
And
Kayla McGrath 27 against NSW.
