McGrath continues good form

Tahlia McGrath continued her rich vein of form with 76 against Port. This season she has scores of 47, 69 and 76 for Southern.  She has also been involved in two match winning partnerships with the State Team over recent weeks 31 of 62 v WA and 25 of 78 v Qld (both with state captain Lauren Ebsary.)

Thanks to debut players Olivia Robinson and Lexi Edwards who assisted us over the weekend.  We also had our Alice Springs player Tabatha Saville and Kangaroo Islander Georgia Weatherspoon.

Tabatha scored her highest score of 36 adding 106 for the second wicket with Tahlia.  Georgia bowled economically conceding 32 runs off her 10 overs.

We made 189 off our 50 overs.

Brandi Ongley took a wicket in her first over to give us the start we were after.  We took the wicket of state player Amanda Wellington in the 13th over.  But an 82 run stand for the third wicket took the gme out of our reach.  despite two wickets (one run out) in one over from Tabitha Port scored the runs in the 37yh over.  Port captain and state keeper Alicia Dean finished 102 no.

This week sees the start of the C grade competition with Serena Ongley, Nikki Moyle and the Charman sisters being joined by our new players from the Reynella all girls competition.

We wish Kayla McGrath well with her Under 15 duties over the next few weeks.

Back to earth

After last week’s great win we came back to earth with a seven wicket loss to undefeated team Kensington.

Batting first we just could not get partnerships going.  Rachael batted well for 11 and there were cameos from Donna (9), Dayna (8),Nuggett (8) and Kayla (7).

60 was never going to be enough.  Cara took our only wicket (1/8 off three) and Brandi bowled economically again (three overs for 8).

This week we have Port in a 50 over game.

Dayna 1000

Congratulations to Dayna who scored her 1,000 run for Southern over the weekend.  Her top score is 58 and has been involved in two 100 run opening partnerships with Jess O’Reilly.

She was not involved in the first win for the C grade that season but joined us for the 3rd win.

She made four and took a wicket in the C grade  premiership and was captain of our T20 premiership last year.

Dayna was part of the C grade premiership 10 years ago – having played some Scorpion Cup games in the previous season.  She joined us from Happy Valley Primary where she had played in the senior boys team with brother Cody.

Kylie inspires win

Kylie Rattray returned to her form of last season with a typically aggressive 71 no off 36 balls to give us our second T20 win for the season.

Kylie hit seven sixes and three four s in a devastating final five overs where she scored 61 of the required 70 runs off24 balls with seven sixes and three fours.

With one over to go she hit the third ball for six, fourth ball for four, had a wide bowled to her ball five and hit the final ball of the game for six to secure the win.

In West Torrens innings they were 1/59 after 10 and looked headed for 120 or more but we held them to 107.

Tight bowling in the middle overs from Kayla McGrath 3/6 ( off three)  and some good fielding saw us hold the Eagles to 48 off their last ten overs including 3/7 in the last three.

Brandi Ongley continued her good work with a further two wickets and Dayna Cox picked up two tail enders to finish with 2/19.

Brandi Ongley also batted well to make 12 and consolidate the innings after the loss of two early wickets.  Dayna Cox took the bulk of the Eagles opening bowlers to finish with 17 off 24 (including a six.)

Kayla McGrath again provided invaluable support for Kylie – she was involved in a 43 run stand for the fifth wicket – scoring  two but she ran well.

Donna Clark also made two – facing only four balls of the 32 run sixth wicket stand in 16 balls.

McGraths dominate Blues – but fall 40 runs short

The game against Sturt saw Tahlia McGrath score 69 and take two wickets and sister Kayla taking a wicket and a run out together with 14 runs.  Their  80 run third wicket stand took us to within striking distance ( we needed 68 off 12 overs at a little under a run a ball.) But the loss of Kayla and Kylie rattray swung the game back in the Blues favour.

Losing the toss we put great fielding pressure our opponents.  We had them 3/20 in the 10th over (two run outs) and 8/80 in the 30th.  But late wicket stands of 38 for the 9th and 10th wickets took them to an above par 156.

Brandi Ongley took two wickets (her first in A grade) and Tahlia McGrath took two in two balls to finish with 2/32.

We lost two early wickets in the chase to be 2/12 in the 11th.  But the McGrath sisters put together a well constructed 80 run stand.  Kayla batted patiently for 14 (with some aggressive work toward the end of the innings) and Tahlia all but carried her bat, batting deep into the last over.

We wish all our November birthday members all the best this week.  Tahlia, Shari, Kempey, Donna and anyone else we have left out!!
