Women: B’S FIRST WIN FOR THE SEASON

The B grade women broke through for their first win for the season in a last ball thriller over Port. It was our first win over Port in B grade as we lost to them in the four games we played last season (including last year's semi final.)

We sent the Maggies in and were set 128. Their innings was set up by a 99 run first wicket stand (the first wicket falling in the 14th over to Rachael Greenshields.) The loss of wickets slowed the momentum of the innings as we took 5 for 29 in the last seven overs. Kayla McGrath bowled accurately "at the death" to take 2/9 off three overs with Rachael (two wickets) and Nick "Nuggett" Adams (one) also bowling well.

The Southern innings started with a rush (18 off the second over) to have us 0/29 when spin was introduced in the fourth over. Wickets in consecutive balls saw us 2/29 in the fifth.

But Nuggett (Nick Adams) and Shorty (aka Kayla McGrath) rebuilt the innings to take us to 3/94 in the 17th over. This partnership of 63 set up the fireworks which were to follow. Brandi Ongley batting at Number 6 came in with 35 needed off 18 legal deliveries. We scored nine off the 18th over – equation 25 off 12. The second last over went for 15 with a mixture of wides, byes and runs off the bat. With one over to go we needed 10. Nuggett did the job with the first five balls scoring (9) - two, dot, two, four and one. With Brandi's hit through square leg for two we won the game on the last ball.

Nuggett's 64 no off 54 balls was a Personal Best. (It continues her good scores for the season with 64 off 54 balls with nine fours.) For Kayla it was a very mature innings with Port fielders around the bat she pushed the gaps and made Nuggett really work for her singles.

Notes on the game

  • Nick Adams 64 no PB (after scores of (11, 17 and 21 this season)
  • Kayla McGrath 14 PB
  • Adams / McGrath 63 off 73 balls and Adams / Ongley 35 off 14 balls
  • Port lost 5 for 29 off 6.5 overs having been 0/99
