A’s finish first half of the season with a win… Cs fall just short again

The As finished the pre-Christmas half of the season with a big T20 win over Tea Tree Gully.  The Gullies were weakened with the loss of Coach Steph Morrison (CA Cup) and State rep Tamara Clapton.  We batted first with Courtney Brideson 23 (33) powering her way to her PB in A grade and Jess O'Reilly 32 (33) giving us the perfect start with 52 off the first 10 overs.

We lost three wickets in four overs to get behind the run a ball rate – but a late flurry from Donna Clark 11 off 11, Shari 3 off four, Rachael 3 off five and Marg Hay 31 off 16 we finished with a very competitive 7/121.

Our first ten overs in the field played the Gullies out of the game –they scored 24 (to be 39 behind the required run rate.)  Dayna 0/3, Courtney 0/7 were able to "keep it tight" with Marg Hay and Donna Clark finishing with two wickets each.

The Cs fell just 10 runs short in their T10 rain shortened game against Tea Tree Gully.  We held them to 50 off 10 overs with wickets to Kelly Armstrong (first over for three games in a row) and Brandi Ongley.

We started well with 14 off the first two overs – but we suffered a mid order collapse losing four wickets in two overs to put us behind in the run chase.  Ellie Jamieson batted well in the lower order and her 18 run stand with Marg Jude brought us within sight of a win. But we fell agonisingly short.

The Bs had the bye.

As demolish Northern Bs welcome back Shari and the Cs just go down

The A grade defeated Northern for the second time for the season with a74 run win the T20 game

We batted first making 130 off the 20 overs.  Dayna was the backbone of the innings with 42 (40 balls) and her 63 run partnership with Marg Hay (43 off 36) set up the better than a run a ball score.  Kylie's 16 off six balls included four boundaries. (strike rate in this competition is 210!!!! 63 runs off 31 balls)

Jess O'Reilly (fresh off the plane from her Volleyball trip) bowled State Squad members Stockley and Fiebig in three balls in her first over to put the Northerners behind the eight ball.  We bowled and fielded well with Tahlia McGrath taking the figures of 3/14 off four overs.

The Bs welcomed back Shari Bray after her adventures in the wilds of South America.  Shari carried her bat for 36 no out of our total of 2/78.  She was well supported by Kayla Staszuk (24 including five 4s.)

Port passed us in the 18th over – but not after a couple of scares.  We took 4/10 from overs 14-17 after the Port captain retired (not realising she could not return!!!)

Shari also took a wicket as did (caught daughter bowled Mum for the second time for the season!!!!)

The Cs were set 88 after we held them to 12 in the last five overs.  Kayla McGrath took the figures in her split spell (2/13) and Hannah Armstrong took her season tally to eight with another wicket in her first over (after two last game.)

We started well with Amy White and Kelly Armstrong making 31 in the first eight overs. But we could not maintain the run rate falling 23 runs short.  Marg Jude continued her "red ink" form with 8no (still to be dismissed this season.)

The Bs have the bye next week – the As play TTG in a T20 game on Saturday and the Cs play Sunday.

Well done to Dayna Cox who finished 2nd in the District Cricket Relay last Saturday during the Test Match.  She and Jack Taylor earned $1000 for the club from sponsors the Commonwealth Bank and Vodafone.

Hannah Armstrong Powerade Cricketer of the Round

 From SACA website

Meanwhile, Southern District hosted Port Adelaide during last weekend's round of the Powerade Twenty20 Cup. Having won the toss Southern District Captain Joylene Brown elected to bowl first in a hope to dismiss Port Adelaide cheaply. 11-year-old Hannah Armstrong opened the bowling for Southern in only her fourth match for the club and managed to dismiss both opening batters with her first over. Hannah was not finished terrorizing the Magpie batting line-up as she took another wicket during her third over leaving Port Adelaide in trouble at 3/4. In her fourth and final over Hannah managed to dismiss another Magpies batter leaving her with incredible figures of 4/5. Port Adelaide was eventually bowled out in the 16th over thanks largely to Hannah's efforts.

Southern District batted well during their innings and after batting out their allotted overs finished with 4/85. This was the Stingrays third win for the season. Other strong performers during this round of the Powerade Twenty20 Cup were Kensington's Tiffani Thackeray who scored 30 not out and Kayla Staszuk (Southern District) who scored an unbeaten 27 runs.

Ben and Hannah will be automatically included in the Powerade Junior Team of the Year and will be awarded a 'Powerade Junior Cricketer of the Round' pack at their respective clubs. They will also be invited to attend a function at the Adelaide Oval at the end of the season, acknowledging them, along with other nominees throughout the year, of their outstanding performances over the season.

As win, Bs lose Cs win

As we go into the Test Match weekend we had good wins in A and C grade.

Both A and B grade T20s were converted into t10s due to the over-night rain.

The As won their first T20 game with a convincing 34 run win over East Torrens. . We scored a more than competitive 94 off ten overs.  We set the game up with Dayna Cox (27 off 12) and Kylie Rattray (34 off 12) scoring very heavily.  We secured early wickets to have the Easterners 2/19 off their first five overs and play them out of the game.

A warm welcome back to Karin Prince who became A grade cap number 20 over the weekend. Karin last played with us in the 2008/9 season.

The situation was reversed in the Bs as we chased 68.  Kamani accepted the late call up to carry her bat for 33 not out of 47.(IN FACT 33 OFF 44 scored off the bat)  Robyn Lecornu  and Brandi Ongley both took wickets and our former team mate Jade Ambler (22) batted well for the Westerners.

The Cs defeated Port for the second time for the season.  Bowling first we soon took the initiative with two wickets in the first over to Hannah Armstrong (finishing with 4/5 off four!) and a wicket apiece to Kayla Staszuk and Emily Armstrong.  Port were 5/19 in the seventh and recovered somewhat to finish with 54.

Kayla Staszuk was the backbone of our reply – making 27 (retired no). She was involved in a 55 run fourth wicket stand with Nikki Moyle (11 retired no).  Their partnership making all of the Port score!!!!!. Nikki batted very well at Number five – showing good defence and flourishing with pull shots after we passed their score.

Kayla McGrath Powerade player of the Round

From the SACA website

Meanwhile, in Round four of the Powerade Twenty20 Cup, an all-round performance by Southern District's Kayla McGrath has resulted in her being selected as the 'Powerade Junior Cricketer of the Round'.

Playing against Sturt at AA Bailey Reserve, the Blues won the toss and elected to bat. However, it did not take long for the Stingray bowlers to have top of the table Sturt in trouble. McGrath was instrumental in restricting Sturt to 42 runs, finishing with impressive figures of 3/5 from 3.4 overs which included one maiden.

The Stingrays made a good start to their innings before McGrath came in at 1/29. She then proceeded to punish the Sturt bowlers and was at the crease when her team passed the required total. After their twenty overs, Southern District finished with 6/80 with McGrath undefeated with 27 runs from just 43 deliveries.

A GRADE BACK TO EARTH

All Women's teams had losses over the weekend.

The As were struck by a "Shelley Nitschke onslaught" of 198 as they came up against last year's premiers Sturt for the second week in a row.

Our opening batters Tahlia McGrath (24) and Rachael Greenshields (12) did a great job batting for 18 of the best overs of practice imaginable.  Rachael straight driving the state opening bowler Rhianna Peate for a boundary was a highlight.  Some of Tahlia's drives were very well timed.  Both players ran well between the wickets and picked the gaps well.

Rachael also had a good day with the ball bowling 5 overs and taking career best figures of 4/28.

We had two early wickets with State reps Dean and Galbraith out in the 11th over – but a 153 3rd wicket stand between Shelley and Fiona McDonald (83) saw us out of the game.

Kylie Rattray eventually took the prize wicket in the last over.

The Bs came up against a full strength West Torrens (their As had the bye) and our former team mate Jade Ambler who is coaching there this year.

We were very understaffed due to family commitments and illness.  But we kept West Torrens to a respectable 100 of 40.  Kayla McGrath bowled well "at the death" to finish with 2/3 (off four overs) and Cara Allen bowled with good line to take 1/15 off eight overs.

Kayla McGrath top scored making 22 of our 42.  (Kayla also top scored in the Cs last week with 27 no to earn a nomination for SACA Powerade Cricketer of the Week.)

A big thank you to Linda McGrath, Amy White and Kayla McGrath who assisted this week with call ups to the Bs.

The Cs chased Northern's 105 and looked out of it at 5/15.  But the Marg Jude (42no) and Kelly Armstrong (10) took us to 48 in the 12th.  Marg batted well – sheltering the tail. Nat Ongley and Marg put on 19 to take us to 81 with three overs to go and just a sniff of a win.

We fielded well – the best of the bowlers was newly found leggie Hannah Armstrong who took 1/6 off four and troubled all the batters.

Thanks to all players who are messaging me if they can't get to practice.

And if unavailable early – it makes life a lot easier.

We welcome Ellie Jamieson to the C grade –thanks to Scott Heywood at Hallett Cove Primary School.

Keep the players coming in!!!!

We wish Dayna Cox and Jacinta Stropin well as they represent us in the Ashes Test match duties. Dayna who will represent Southern District  at the Annual Test Match sprint for  grade cricketers (Saturday in the test match) and Jacinta who will be the flag bearer on Sunday (previous done by Dayna, Rachael and Cara)

As and Bs strike the Blues - Cs beat top team

In the ALL STURT WEEKEND our As and Bs lost their T20 games but the Cs came up trumps.

The C grade win over the previously undefeated Sturt was dominated by Kayla McGrath who top-scored with 27 no and was our destroyer taking 3/5 off 3.4 overs (all bowled!!!!)

The win was set up in the early stages with some very good bowling from opening bowlers Kelly and Hannah Armstrong who held Sturt to 12 off their first five overs.  We took wickets at regular intervals with Emily Armstrong taking two and Amy White one before Kayla came on and mopped up the tail.

We started aggressively in our innings scoring 16 off the first two overs.  Hannah Armstrong (12 – with two boundaries) and Amy White (8) put on 29 for the first wicket in six overs to give us the upper hand.  Kayla McGrath and Kelly Armstrong were the two batters in when we passed their score in the 11th over.  A 13 run last wicket stand between Linda (mum) and Kayla in 18 balls was the cream on the cake.

In A grade the Sturt openers put on 115 for the first wicket to have us behind the eight ball.  We did not take a wicket until the 18th over.  Nuggett batted well again for 36 (44 balls) but we lost wickets in the quest for quick runs.  Jess O'Reilly and Kylie Rattray 12 (12 balls) were solid contributors.

The Bs could not continue last week's good form over Sturt.  The Blues made 7/63. Jess Vincent bowled well again taking 2/3 off three overs and Rachael Greenshields and Robyn LeCornu were accurate with a wicket a piece.  We lost early wickets and could not get ourselves back in the game.  Robyn held the batting together making 22 no and Joy Brown and Robyn put on 20* for the last wicket.

This week is our run athon weekend – get your sponsors organised.

We go back to the long form of the game with the As at home at Bice to Sturt (11.50 start) the Bs to play West Torrens at Christies High (1pm start) and the Cs play Northern at 12 at Helen Black.

All teams are home so don't forget afternoon teas for the As and Bs.

Start getting your prizes together for our Quiz night on January 22.  Please get them to Kempey or Marg Hay.

NUGGETT PLAYS A GEM OF AN INNINGS.

Nicole "Nuggett" Adams scored the first century in the history of the Southern District Women's Cricket Club.  For her efforts she earned a $500 diamond from John M Roberts (Master Jeweller) as part of the club sponsorship deal.

In the process the Bs won their first game for the season defeating top team Sturt - passing their score in the 26th over.

We bowled first and had them 6/34 in the 22nd over.  All bowlers were accurate. Wickets were shared in this early part of the game with economical opening spells from Cara Allen 1/3 (three overs) and Brandi Ongley 0/8 (three overs.)  Our second change bowlers Karmani Gilligan (0/14 off six) and Courtney Brideson 1/6 (off five) continued the good work.

Rachael Greenshields 2/9 off five and Jess Vincent 1 / 2 off five continued to exert pressure.  A 7th wicket partnership of 48 gave the Blues a reasonable score of 83.

We lost early wickets to be 3/16 – but steady partnerships of 18 (Rachael Greenshields and Nuggett) and 19 (Linda Anderson) took us within seven of victory.  Karmani Gilligan and Nuggett put the cream on the cake with 59 for the 8th wicket and Kayla Staszuk and Nuggett took the score to 162 at the finish.

Nuggett's innings was highlighted by 15 powerfully hit boundaries and 41 singles – many of which were hit within metres of the boundary on the heavy Christies Beach outfield.  It was made on the back of wicket keeping for 35 overs during Sturt's innings.

Highlights

  • Nuggett's 102 no is the highest individual score of any SDCC women's player – surpassing Jess O'Reilly 87 no v Sturt (2008/9)
  • It surpassed her previous PB of 64 no v Port last season in B grade
  • It is the first 100 scored in B grade by any player  this season
  • It was  B grade's first win for the season and was over B grade leader Sturt
  • 59 run partnership for the 7th wicket was a new B grade record for the club – with no other 7th wicket stand of over 25.
  • Nuggett batted for 36 overs – just over two hours

*********************************************************************

The Cs lost to C grade leaders Tea Tree Gully.  We had them in early trouble getting two early wickets (2/23 off 5).  However two "over 30" scores put them in the box seat with 3/101 in the 13. We held them well in the last seven conceding only 16 in the last seven overs.  Kayla Staszuk bowled tightly at the death with 3/9 off her four overs.  Hannah Armstrong bowled well taking two wickets and fielded superbly with three catches.

Amy White batted well at the top of the order and Tianna Muirhead and Marg Jude (red ink again – third no for the season from three innings) put on 32 for the last wicket.

The A grade had the bye

This weekend we take on Sturt at their home grounds in the T20 competitions.

The As at Price Memorial, Bs at Unley and Cs at Bailey Reserve all games start at 12 noon on Sunday.

Congratulations to Courtney, Tahlia, Donna and Kylie who have been chosen in the SA Under team which goes away in December.

A and B grade games cancelled

The C graders really struggled against Kensington at Christies on Sunday.  Batting first Kensys made 3/73 (off 20).  We fielded well producing three run outs.  Kelly Armstrong bowled well with two overs for two and Kayla McGrath bowled well at the death with four overs for five.

We could not get going with the bat…. In the windy conditions and the slow outfield we could only score singles.  Kayla McGrath spend some good time in the middle to top score with 7no.

The As and Bs were abandoned due to rain on Friday.

This week the As have the bye with the Bs and Cs playing Sunday.

Dayna destroys TTG - Cs open with a win - Bs battle hard against ET

The A grade continued their perfect start to the season with a 42 run win over arch – rival Tea Tree Gully.

We lost the toss and were put in on a wicket which was affected by the overnight rain – we were in early trouble losing 4/17 (wickets falling to state opening bowler Steph Morrison)  – but a 30 run stand between Jess and Marg Hay (the best for the game) steadied the ship and  Nuggett's late order hitting saw us to 94 on the wicket which still had a little bit in it.

Jess's 31 no ( in just under two hours) was the backbone of the innings.

They started well with 23 in the first eight overs.  But the injury to one of their batters started a collapse which saw three batters fall in the 15 minutes before tea including

Donna removed the dangerous state batter Tamara Clapton.

After tea it was the Dayna Cox show – she took 6 wickets in 10 balls in a devastating spell of accurate seam bowling..

Dayna's remarkable spell….

SIX WICKETS IN 10 BALLS

W . W.end of over W..wide WW.(end of over) . W – 10 BALLS 6/1

TTG finished with 52.

*************************************************************

Dayna becomes our first A grade winner of the $20 Cricket wWarehouse voucher for her

52 (PB with bat) against Northern  and 6/1 (PB with ball).

Other contenders were Jess O'Reilly for 52 v Northern and 31 no against TTG (Highest score for the match)  and Marg Jude's 4 wickets against Northern.

 ************************************************************************

B Grade

The B Grade battled their way to 65 against last years finalists East Torrens.

We batted our 40 overs with Robyn Lecornu making 17 and being given great support from Linda Anderson (11) – 27 run partnership and Jess Vincent  late in the innings.

We took two early wickets (2/31) but they passed us in the 13th over. (Tina Leicester making 69).

Brandi had a good game with two wickets and  11 and Cara Allen bowled six accurate overs.

( A big thank you to Linda McGrath who played and A graders Courtney, Marg Hay and Rachael who assisted with sub fielding.)

**********************************************************************

The Cs opened the season with a win.

They scored 47 after we sent them in.  Kayla Staszuk took a wicket with her first ball and Mum Joy also took a wicket (caught Kayla) – but Tianna took the figures with 2/11.

Our batting saw two good innings from newcomers Georgia Tilbrook (best partnership of 20 with Kayla) and Nikki Moyle ( partnership of 20 with Marg Jude.)

Once again Joy and Marg were great in the field with the youngsters.

A warm welcome to Danika Thomas who played her first game on Sunday.

Womens A Grade win

The Women's A Grade got away to a strong start against Northern District by making 6 for 226 of 50 overs. Top scoring was Dayna Cox with 58 from 120 balls and she was well supported by Jess O'Reilly 52 from 100 balls.

In reply the Jets fell well short with 8 for 199 of 50 overs. Marg Hay was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 30 from her 10 overs, Jess added to her contribution with the bat taking 2 for 26 of 10 overs and Donna Clark also picked up 2 wickets for 43 of 8.1 overs.

A good solid victory which can only bring confidence to the entire Women's playing group.

The inexperineced B's were beaten by a strong Northern outfit, chasing the Jets 9 for 150 of 40 overs with Kayla Staszuk taking 2 for 19 of 6 overs, Kelly Armstrong 2 for 29 of 6 overs and Emily Armstrong chipping in with 2 for 6 of 4 overs.

The Stingrays were never in the run chase. In reply the Stingrays were all out for 52, despite a spirited fighting 32 run last wicket stand by Joylene Brown and Marg Jude, Northern ran out convincing winners.

All will be better for the hit out and we wish our Women every success for the coming 20-20 round against Port Adelaide.

As start the season with a win “Old ducks" save outright in Bs

The A grade started 2010-11 with a very impressive 35 run win over Northern.

The batting was highlighted with captain Jess O'Reilly scoring her third 50 in  row (two in her last two games last season) and Dayna Cox scoring her first A grade 50.  These two young "veterans" – both in their fifth season of senior cricket at 17 put on 88 as we amassed an A grade record of 6/226 off our 50 overs.

They were well supported in the last few overs by Marg Hay, Nuggett and Donna Clark who scored better than a run a ball over the last six overs.

Northern started well with 117 off the first 22 – but with a combination of good fielding, accurate bowling and  key wickets we held them to 9/199.  Marg Hay took the figures with 4/30 off 10 overs and Brandi Ongley taking two catches in her A grade debut were highlights.

The other obvious highlight was the debut of  keeper Kayla McGrath.  At 11 we know Kayla is the youngest A grader for Southern and we are checking on SACA ? SAWCA records.

The Bs started well with wickets in the first two overs – having Northern 2/5 – but their middle order and tail enders kept us in the field for the full 40 overs making 150.
Kayla bowled well in her A grade debut for Southern taking 2/19.  But the highlight was two superb catches from Kelly Armstrong.

Our batting was soon in big trouble – after Kayla was spectacularly run out off a freakish touched run out we were facing outright defeat at 4.45 with 8 down for 20.  But solid defence from first Nikki Moyle (18 balls) and the old hands of marg Jude and Joy Brown we batted until 5.44 pm saving outright loss and batting 32 overs.  During the hour long last wicket stand the opposition even used the "old duck" term on many occasions – increasing the determination of our tail-end batters.

This week a double header T20 with the Bs at 12 noon and As at 3pm at Bice.  We expect to have plenty of more players available this week..(A big thank you to all who assisted this week.)  C grade game start on October 24.

INDOOR CRICKET SUMMARY FOR THE SEASON

This year we were not as successful as previous seasons but we still had a great time with six players achieving higher honours and others going on to play Super League either for Woodlands or Morphett Vale.

Jess O'Reilly and Marg Hay were members of the Morphett Vale ICA Sharks which won the Women's Super League Competition.

It was great to see Nuggett playing with Woodlands.

Our Under 15 team finished fourth – in what was a very even competition.  We beat the eventual title winners twice during the season and the runners up once.

Thanks to all the parents and supporters who assisted during the season.  I feel sure we will see the benefit of the games and practice during the outdoor season.

Players – Kylie Rattray, Courtney Brideson, Cara Allen, Brandi Ongley, Donna Clark, Lauren Goldsmith, Rachael Greenshields, William Greenshields, Sam Phillips, Thomas Scott and fill ins Liam Mason, Zak O'Toole and Angus Lock.

Hey Jude from the Umpires newsletter - STICKY WICKET - Happy 70th birthday Marg

This article is from the Umpires newsletter STICKY WICKET
(From Umpire Tim Pellew)

Hey Jude

Not about the Beatles !

Before umpiring a Women's C Grade T20 match

this season between Kensington and Southern District,

I checked the teams' players on the SACA

website and recorded them in my match book.

I wondered if Southern's captain Margaret Jude

could be related to she with the same name with

whom I shared school functions and with whom I

played successful mixed doubles tennis matches.

Upon arrival at the Park 25, gosh, after some 45+

years it was the same old friend, Marg Jude. Imagine

the look on a few faces when our greeting was

a spontaneous mutual hug!

That had to be explained!

Marg Jude is the captain/coach of Southern District

Women's C Grade team, a team that includes many

eager young girls learning to play cricket. A coach

was sought and Marg obtained the job much to her

delight, albeit having to travel from Currency

Creek for once a week practices and for Sunday

matches.

In response to my querying why she was playing at

"our" age she responded that she found it the only

way she could successfully guide so many of the

youngsters. As she had in her youth, she kept wickets

from where she felt could help her team best.

Wicketkeep at her age, I thought, squatting, standing,

squatting and so on!

The youngest in her team was just 9 years old –

yes, a bit young maybe but the young girl wants to

play and there is a shortage of players for that

grade of cricket down south. So there it was, a

cricket team in an official match with 60 years between

oldest and youngest player.

Maybe a record there somewhere!

But what about Margaret Jude?

It is my guess that I was the only person at the

ground that day that knew quite a bit about her

background, that in fact she played 1 Test Cricket

match for Australia in 1963 against England at

Lords as the reserve 'keeper.' She played 5 ODIs

representing both Australia and the International

Women's Team and played in the first year of the

women's ODI World Cup competition in 1972

as Vice Captain of the International team

(remember, the men's first ODI World Cup competition

was 1975).

Marg played cricket at Adelaide University from

1959-61 and then for Graduates team and represented

South Australia from 1958-62. After completing

her diploma as a Physical Education

teacher in 1962, she moved to Sydney until selected

for the 1963 Australian Women's cricket

tour of England. She remained in England for 2

years and played for Invicta Club and for Surrey

Club. Back to Adelaide she again represented our

State in cricket and also in hockey. In 1969 she

was selected in the Australian Women's hockey

team to tour UK. She again stayed in England

where she played cricket for 3 years within the

Club and County competitions as captain of Buckinghamshire

team and also played for Gunnesbury

Cricket Club. Back to SA and played State cricket

the following year before retiring from that level,

but continued to play lower grade cricket for many

years.

Margaret Jude is to be applauded for continuing

her interest in women's cricket by helping the

needs of the real starters and strugglers at Southern

District Women's Cricket Club.

STATE NEWS

We had five reps in the State Indoor teams which played at Windsor Gardens in the first week of the school holidays.

Jess O'Reilly was captain with Kylie Rattray vice captain of the Under 18 side which included Rachael Greenshields, Courtney Brideson, Brittney Miller and Donna Clark.  The team was competitive in most games running Victoria to two runs.

I feel sure we will see the benefit of this sort of intensive game pressure as the season unfolds.
